New system for tracing Welsh patient details

Informing Healthcare (published 05/10/2009)

Since the closure of the NSTS in the UK, Welsh healthcare providers can now trace patient details through the Welsh Demographic Service

Users of the new Welsh Demographic Service (WDS) will find it easier to trace patient identity and administrative details following an upgrade to the service.

From the beginning of October the WDS will receive daily updates from the five Welsh National Health Applications and Infrastructure Services (NHAIS).

Welsh health organisations can no longer trace patients through the UK National Strategic Tracing Service (NSTS), which was closed on 30 September. This was the closure date agreed unanimously by the NSTS termination board at its last meeting.

Advice on how to find details of patients that are difficult to trace is available through the Welsh Demographic Services Team (DST) in Health Solutions Wales.
