IMPAC Medical Systems, an Elekta Company, has introduced an update for its MOSAIQ image-enabled oncology information system that will support OBI Advanced Imaging, Varian's new OBI workstation software.
Among support available with MOSAIQ 1.6 is the ability to automatically import CBCT images generated on Varian treatment machines.'This IMPAC-Varian collaboration is the latest example of IMPAC's continued commitment to an open system environment that facilitates exceptional connectivity among many different equipment vendors,' said Jay Hoey, president and chief executive officer of IMPAC Medical Systems. 'Our two companies worked closely and efficiently to ensure IMPAC customers could take advantage of new Varian connectivity and benefit from the innovative 3D distributed image review capabilities and sophisticated decision-making tools, long a part of MOSAIQ.' 'This was a particularly well-coordinated development process between Varian and IMPAC product teams,' added Leon Tomczyk, IMPAC product manager. 'The lab environment, made available to us by Varian, facilitated the testing and implementation of the seamless integration between MOSAIQ and OBI Advanced Imaging. Both companies worked together with St Mary Corwin Hospital to coordinate the upgrade process. ' 'Having CBCT images available for viewing in the MOSAIQ oncology information system is a great asset,' according to Greg Gibbs, MSc, medical physicist at St Mary Corwin Hospital (Pueblo, Colo), the clinical site for testing the compatibility of the MOSAIQ and OBI Advanced Imaging software. 'Cone beam images are analogous to port films, which we have kept in MOSAIQ for medical and legal purposes as a record of where we treated,' Gibbs noted. 'So, having the ability to import CBCT images into the patient's EMR contributes to the completeness of the EMR from a documentation standpoint.' 'In addition, clinicians now can access CBCT datasets remotely at their convenience, instead of always having to visit the control area - we now can import CBCT images, which is a much better solution.' IMPAC also is working with Varian to support the RapidArc product and have plans to upgrade a mutual customer in late August of 2008.
