Design consultancy Cambridge Design Partnership has developed RauSafe, an award winning needle safety device to protect healthcare workers from needlestick injuries. Both the USA Needlestick Act (2000) and the EU Needle Safety Directive (2010) came into force to help prevent sharps injuries in hospitals but many existing prefilled glass syringes on the market did not meet these needle safety regulations. The RauSafe can be retro-fitted to existing syringes to avoid the necessity for the long and expensive process of revalidation.

Infra-red laser beams are absorbed differently by different molecules - they are invisible, but perfectly suited for analysing liquids and gases. This effect can for instance be used to measure the oxygen concentration in blood. At the Vienna University of Technology, this technique has now been miniaturised and implemented in the prototype for a new kind of sensor. The concept can be applied to a wide variety of molecules such as carbohydrates or proteins, for many different applications in chemical, biological or medical analytics.
