Demand for sustainability drives Vernacare’s sales growth

Vernacare : 08 March, 2010  (Company News)
An annual sales growth of 54 percent on its biodegradable wash bowls is being witnessed by Vernacare.
The strong demand for Vernacare’s eco-friendly human waste disposal products is the result for a drive for sustainability becoming a top priority for healthcare managers. The UK business, which manufactures single-use pulp bed pans, urinals, wash bowls and other products from recycled newspaper, also produces the market leading Vortex macerator. The Vernacare system uses a cold water process to break down the pulp into minute fragments that wash away with the waste water. The system is an environmentally friendly alternative to the traditional process of chemically disinfecting, washing and drying plastic bedpans and washbowls at high temperatures, and the problem of disposing of plastic which is almost impossible to biodegrade. According to statistics from the Department of Health, English NHS bodies spent £75 million in 2008/09 to dispose of more than 436,000 tonnes of waste, contributing over one percent of all municipal waste in the UK. The NHS also generates more than 18 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. Said Philip Bradley, Global Marketing Manager For Vernacare UK: “While the advantages of the Vernacare system from an infection prevention perspective are widely acknowledged and have been the major influence among purchasers, sustainability is increasingly becoming a key consideration for our customers”. “There is also a real cost driver for customers as energy bills and landfill fees rise steeply. Our own detailed analysis of the total ten-year lifetime cost for an average 25-bed ward using the single-use Vernacare system versus the traditional plastic re-usable system showed that the latter is more than three times more expensive. This is because of the high energy and waste disposal costs, together with additional requirement to test washer/dryer systems in compliance with HTM2030.” Vernacare has recently launched a new Technical Services division – dedicated to commissioning, servicing and maintaining its market leading macerators.
