McKesson is set to help PCTs to procure external support

McKesson UK has been appointed by the Department of Health to the Framework for procuring External Support for Commissioners (FESC).
The framework will provide Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) with easy access to expert suppliers who can support them in undertaking their commissioning functions.

McKesson has been appointed to the FESC to assist Primary Care Trusts in further strengthening their commissioning functions, by developing and implementing a plan of action to manage demand, that will take account of the local care requirements and will provide consultation regarding prioritising patients.

PCTs can now benefit from McKesson’s proven experience gained over 30 years from working with over 3700 hospitals and 1200 managed care organisations and other bodies such as Medicare and Medicaid, and Veterans Administration in the US. The wealth of experience will be enhanced as McKesson applies its knowledge and understanding of the NHS gained from over 17 years involvement and 10 years of providing the NHS Wide Clearing Service (NWCS); which provides data to PCTs and hospitals based on the referrals and care given to patients.

PCTs are faced with a challenge whereby the demand for services has been known to outstrip the availability of resources for those services. This can lead to extended waiting time for patients. Using a combination of advice and innovative tools, McKesson will be able to help PCTs identify the known and unknown demand for services and to validate the delivery of care services.

McKesson has been developing Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) for over 30 years and has a clinical panel of 800 clinical experts who help in the annual revisions to ‘content’. This EBM approach is at the heart of configuring services and directing patients to the right level of care at the right place and at the right time.

McKesson will be seeking to work collaboratively with PCTs and Practice Based Commissioners (PBC), to offer support and tools to provide information to enable them to make use of resources to benefit patient care in a safe and effective manner. A key aspect of the plans McKesson hopes to implement is the transference of their skills to PCT and PBC staff when needed.
