Tunstall Healthcare equips Saxon Weald social housing with telecare solutions

Tunstall Group : 24 March, 2011  (Application Story)
Tunstall Healthcare is deploying a range of telecare solutions at Saxon Weald, one of the largest providers of social housing in West Sussex, to enhance security and safety for residents living in its Extra Care retirement housing.
Based in West Sussex, Saxon Weald owns and manages more than 5,700 properties across East and West Sussex and Hampshire, including general needs, retirement and shared ownership homes. The organisation provides Extra Care housing schemes, which are purpose built for residents with care and support needs. A Scheme Manager provides housing support and a care team is onsite 24 hours a day to administer care commissioned by Adult Social Care.

The deployment at Downlands Court, which has 41 independent flats and is one of two extra care housing schemes in East Sussex, has significantly improved residents’ quality of life, maximising their independence and providing enhanced security for peace of mind.

Carole Holland, Extra Care Services Manager for Saxon Weald said: “Safety and security are a priority for us. We wanted to ensure maximum safety for all our residents without encroaching on their independence. The Telecare solutions allow us to appropriately manage security throughout the property, ensuring residents’ safety whilst still promoting independent living.”

Tunstall’s Communicall Connect was deployed to provide a 24-hour communications system that allowed staff to communicate with residents through speech modules installed in both individual dwellings and communal areas.

A range of sensors were provided to enhance security throughout the property. Fob-operated door entry sensors were connected to allow easy and secure access to staff and residents with limited dexterity. Tunstall also provided doorframe cameras that streamed live images to residents’ television screens, allowing those with visual impairments to see large-scale images of their visitor, providing extra reassurance and security.

Alison Rogan, UK communications director, said: “Tunstall and Saxon Weald have already worked together on a number of developments, and we are pleased to be able to continue to meet their needs again. The support that Saxon Weald offers residents improves their quality of life and now Telecare is also playing a fundamental role in helping to maximise their independence, while ensuring help is always on hand when required.”

Additional Telecare sensors were installed to reduce potential risks including heat and smoke detectors, as well as door alerts on fire exits to inform carers if a door is opened unnecessarily.
