Belgian hospital deploys Orbis Care electronic nursing documentation solution

Agfa HealthCare Benelux : 20 June, 2008  (Application Story)
Imelda Hospital in Bonheiden (Belgium) has registered more than 15,000 nursing documentation forms electronically in Agfa HealthCare’s Orbis, after the initial go-live in November, 2007.
The Imelda Hospital is one of Agfa HealthCare's pilot sites in Belgium and the first of eight Belgian Orbis customers that have gone live with Orbis Care.

Orbis ' capabilities to easily customise electronic forms based on best-practice standards now allows the nurses at Imelda Hospital document their main nursing activities within Orbis Care. Successfully reaching the milestone for an electronic nursing record with a stable interface to Imelda's existing ADT System (Admission, Discharge, Transfer) underlines the close cooperation of Agfa HealthCare and the Hospital. Orbis now transparently represents Imelda's efficient nursing workflows electronically acknowledging individual needs and how the nurses prefer to work.

Since January 1, 1988, all Belgian general hospitals are required by law to collect data for a Nursing Minimum Data Set (NMDS) four times a year. Since 2007 the NMDS has been revised from 23 to 78 items. Orbis delivers an answer to these requirements through electronic registration and, in a second phase, planned for completion by the end of 2008, through the seamless integration between the NDMS and the electronic care workflows of Orbis, thus avoiding redundant data entry.

'We have developed a deep feeling of trust and confidence in Agfa HealthCare as a leading healthcare solutions provider, which grew in part from our implementation of Agfa HealthCare's innovative RIS/PACS (Radiology Information System / Picture Archiving and Communication System) solution. We were one of the first hospitals in Belgium to implement PACS, and now we're proud to be among the first Belgian hospitals to implement Orbis, ' stated Marc Gevels, nursing director at Imelda.

'This important milestone was made possible due to intensive and fruitful collaboration between users at Imelda and production teams at Agfa HealthCare. We activated our Orbis specialists in Belgium and internationally to deliver a solid solution and we are proud to say that we have delivered on our promises', stated Twan Weegels, commercial director Agfa HealthCare Benelux. 'We look forward to a continuing and strong relationship with Imelda, who has put their trust in us to deliver a fully integrated enterprise IT solution across its hospital and we will continue to meet their challenges and needs head-on'.

One of the next project steps at Imelda will be the implementation of Care Planning within Orbis, where the captured data from the Nursing Documentation is immediately available for planning processes. Additionally the patient chart, a user friendly tool to evaluate the status of the patient and adapt the corresponding care planning in Orbis, will provide nurses and physicians with a complete overview of all activities and observations that need to be performed resulting in a reduction of unnecessary paper work, redundancies and transmission errors.
