Coventry and Warwickshire research experts clinch UK award for commercial research endeavours

Coventry And Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust : 18 April, 2013  (Company News)
Researchers at Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust collect a national award for their work on recruiting patients into research studies.

The Trust team achieved a 2000 percent increase in the number of patients recruited into research trials in recent years, leaping up the national 'league table' of performance.

As a result the Trust was nominated by the regional Mental Health Research Network hub to be included in the Awards scheme, which is part of the work of the NHS National Institute of Health Research.

The award category was for 'Commercial research endeavours' and recognised outstanding contributions towards the work of the Mental Health Research Network over the last 12 months.

The team has opened and then ensured the delivery of their first-ever commercial trial to time and on target, in 2011/12. Since then, two further commercial trials have been opened and clinical Consultants have been mentored to act in key research roles for the first time.

Prof Scott Weich, the Trust clinical lead for research and innovation, explained: "Numerous expressions of interest have been completed and the team have worked tirelessly in liaising with industry partners, persuading them of the Trust's ability to deliver their studies".

"This is important for developing improved links with industry, and for helping make sure that patients get the best deal possible from the NHS in the future. We also want our patients to be as involved in their care as they can be, as we know this helps us achieve the best outcomes for them".

"We were honoured to be nominated for this award by our peers, and were proud to collect it at the NIHR's prestigious annual ceremony."
