Datalase works with Domino AmJet to provide lot printing solution for packaging applications

DataLase : 23 October, 2007  (New Product)
DataLase is working with Domino AmJet to print lot and expiration codes onto pharmaceutical cartons and labels using DataLase’s Packmark, an innovative imaging solution to mass customise information to primary packaging materials.
Domino is a world-leader in inkjet and laser technologies offering total coding and marking solutions in a variety of markets including the pharmaceutical and medical industries. For this particular application, Domino has worked with DataLase to enable customised information such as lot codes and bar codes to be printed onto pharmaceutical packaging.

The pharmaceutical company traditionally used a hot stamp printer to code its primary packaging. However, this method caused the label to ‘crimp’ thus preventing the label from running smoothly through the applicator, causing a jam. Using hot stamp printing also required the use of ribbons, therefore making the process costly and time consuming.

By incorporating the innovative DataLase Packmark solution into the production line the customer has been able to overcome many of the problems caused by traditional coding and marking techniques. For this application a DSL 25 watt Domino CO2 laser was used to produce a positive black image on a white background without ablation. The area to be marked is coated with DataLase Packmark, and the laser then creates a colour change in the coating. This is a much simpler, more cost-effective and environmentally friendly technology than traditional coding and marking techniques such as hot stamp printing.

'Our customers demand the highest quality products available on the market,' comments Frank Fiore, account manager at Domino. 'In order to meet this demand, we have worked with DataLase to ensure that we can continue to provide the best possible solution to our customers.'

Kevin Murray, vice president sales, at DataLase commented: 'We are extremely pleased that DataLase Packmark has been chosen for this application. Our partnership with Domino demonstrates our commitment to developing tailored printing solutions for a wide range of industries. DataLase aims to provide efficient solutions for mass customisation of packaging for a variety of sectors.'
