Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust implements innovative oncology treatment system

Siemens Healthcare UK : 12 March, 2008  (Application Story)
The Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has placed the first UK order for Siemens’ Artiste Solution.
Artiste is an integrated and comprehensive imaging, treatment and workflow solution engineered specifically for Adaptive Radiation Therapy (ART). The solution ensures high-precision dose delivered directly to the tumour whilst sparing healthy tissue.

Artiste is also the world’s first totally integrated 3D MVision Megavoltage and 3D kVision Kilovoltage In-Line Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) system. With its fast and powerful imaging, tumour size and shape can be closely monitored, enabling precise radiation treatment delivery for the best quality care. Artiste will provide a high standard of comfort to patients during treatment and maximise throughput when the new Radiotherapy department opens its doors in Spring 2009.

The solution was selected to increase Radiotherapy productivity and improve patient treatment. Artiste has been designed to image and treat a greater number of patients in a shorter timescale and the innovative nature of ART means that radiotherapists can accurately target a tumour whilst minimising the dose to healthy tissue.

“Siemens is delighted to receive the first Artiste order from Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust,” said Andy Jeffery, Radiotherapy sales manager at Siemens. “Offering multiple imaging modalities from Megavoltage to in-room CT gives clinicians the flexibility to tailor the most effective treatment approach for each patient. The adaptable nature of the Artiste also means that the department is fully prepared for future advances in treatment procedures, including dose guided radiotherapy.”

The Artiste has a small, 5mm leaf thickness over the full-field and its 160 MLC Multileaf Collimator provides the optimum dose by aiming according to tumour shape rather than size. The system is designed to accommodate a range of patients and provides treatment options for patients weighing up to 550lbs (250kg). Its open design and large patient clearance make it a highly functional choice that will reduce anxiety and enhance patient comfort.

The Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust order also includes the upgrade of two Oncor Expression Linear Accelerators to state-of-the-art functionality. Oncor, the first standard linear accelerator to come standard with the MVision Megavoltage Cone Beam Imaging Package, provides a fully integrated 3D Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) solution for precise and patient-focused radiotherapy.

The Lantis Oncology Information System and Syngo RT suite of workstations will complement both the new and existing systems. These applications support the entire oncology process by storing captured data from every step of the diagnostic and treatment process. The data can then be accessed from any client workstation in any location, creating simplified and streamlined workflow.
