Fully disposable bedpans for Bolton Hospital

Vernacare : 07 April, 2014  (Application Story)
Vernacare will supply hygiene products for Royal Bolton Hospital for its complex care and acute wards
Fully disposable bedpans for Bolton Hospital

Bolton NHS Foundation Trust has partnered with infection prevention products manufacturer Vernacare to achieve the highest standards of patient safety and care.

The Trust has introduced Vernacare's new fully disposable bedpan and support to a number of its complex care and acute wards.

The new product is a world first. It removes the need for a re-usable plastic bedpan support and the infection risk that can pose, while saving money in cases where nurses stack existing bedpans for extra strength, to replace the traditional rigid support.

The Trust’s infection prevention team conducted trials of the new single-use bedpan and support across its complex care wards. Following positive nurse and patient feedback, the new product is being introduced to other wards.

Julie Dziobon, Matron for Infection Control, said: "Because Vernacare’s bedpan system is fully disposable it's better from an infection control perspective. It also saves nurses' time in cleaning and drying the plastic support and relieves the problem of storage. Sluice space is tight, so it's good to have a pulp product that can be stacked neatly - without taking up too much room."

She continued: "We were involved in the early development phases of the new bedpan system which was designed with two key objectives in mind - patient safety and patient comfort. It is satisfying to see that these two objectives have been met and to have played a role in bringing this innovative new product to the market."

Vernacare has re-engineered the traditional bedpan design - that has stood still for decades - to combine increased user comfort with functional performance. The company has 'made the impossible possible' by creating a product from recycled newspaper that has the strength to hold a patient's weight, yet which disintegrates into a fine water slurry when placed in a pulp disposal unit.

Royal Bolton Hospital has also recently introduced Vernacare's commodes following an evaluation of three different products. Staff appraised three different options and concluded that Vernacare's commodes were sturdy and  easier to take apart to clean properly.

The hospital uses the full range of hygienic Vernacare products across the site. Julie Dziobon added: "We trust Vernacare's medical pulp to never leak and to do the job it's designed for. The quality is outstanding and helps us to achieve excellent standards of hygiene."

The Bolton manufacturing business invented the Vernacare System of hygienic patient toileting almost 50 years ago. Today, Vernacare provides the largest range of medical pulp products to the NHS and has held the BSI kitemark since 1999. The company’s stringent quality control ensures superior leak-proof product performance and the prevention of malfunction to pulp disposal equipment, which can be costly to repair and cause blockages to drains.  These high quality standards are evidenced by the fact that the company had just 0.0007% complaints last year from the 140 million items supplied.

Vernacare is an eco-friendly ISO 14001 approved manufacturer - using recycled newsprint, and no bleach or dye in its products.
