Games-based solution helps Medical College of Georgia to train dentists

BreakAway : 08 May, 2008  (Application Story)
BreakAway has been selected by the Medical College of Georgia to develop the Dental Implant Training Simulation improve the teaching and training of dental students patient assessment and diagnosis protocol, and to practice dental implant procedures in a highly immersive, virtual, three dimensional environment.
The Dental Implant Training Simulation is funded through a grant from Nobel Biocare awarded to the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) School of Dentistry.

Powered by BreakAway's exclusive Pulse!! technology, the Dental Implant Training Simulation provides an engaging, distributable, game-based learning environment where dental students interact with patients in a three-dimensional virtual dental office.

Students guide their avatar through the proper decision-making protocol to determine if the patients are physically and mentally prepared for dental Implant procedures. If surgery is required, the student then practices the procedure in a safe and emotionally realistic environment.

'We're thrilled to partner with the Medical College of Georgia for this first application of the Pulse!! technology, offering dental students a virtual tool for clinical practice and training,' said Doug Whatley, BreakAway chief executive officer. 'The Dental Implant Training Simulation is an important first-step in realising our vision to empower medical schools and other health care providers with game-based tools and technology to create and customise virtual curriculum-based training environments that can be accessed on PC desktops around the world.'

'Digital gaming technology is expanding as an essential component in health care education, capitalising on the cognitive learning process to generate a more comprehensive understanding of vital concepts,' said project director Dr Roman M Cibirka, Medical College of Georgia vice president for instruction and associate provost. 'The Dental Implant Training Simulation is a unique venture, bringing together BreakAway, a leader in game-based technology development, with faculty subject matter experts from the NobelBiocare Global University Partner Programme. The project has received invaluable guidance from Sarah Padolsky, an MCG dental student, who has also coordinated reviews by other dental students from the global partnership programme.'

The virtual dental office is designed to improve student learning outcomes in the areas of diagnostics, decision making and treatment protocols for enhanced patient therapy outcomes and risk management. The application will be distributed to dental students worldwide.
