GetWellNetwork offers new series of patient education videos

GetWellNetwork : 11 December, 2007  (New Product)
GetWellNetwork, has introduced the GetWellNetwork Regulations Package, compilation of 60 patient education videos designed to help hospitals address more than 15 requirements and objectives as outlined by the Joint Commission, National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG), Hospital Compare and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI).
The requirements are intended to improve the safety and care of patients. For example, hospitals are required to educate patients on a number of aspects of their care, including the right to pain management (Joint Commission R1.2.160). They are also required to comply with current World Health Organization Hand Hygiene Guidelines or Centers for Disease Control and Prevention hand hygiene guidelines (NPSG 7A).

In addition, more than 4,000 hospitals have enlisted in the IHI's 5 Million Lives Campaign, which challenges hospitals to adopt six new interventions targeted at doing no harm to save lives and reduce patient injuries, including preventing harm from high alert medications and pressure ulcers. The initiative also encourages the delivery of reliable, evidence- based education for congestive heart failure.

To assist hospitals' response to these requirements and objectives, the GetWellNetwork Regulations Package links specific education videos to identified regulation requirements. GetWellNetwork has partnered with six industry-leading providers of education videos to compile this package, including Emmi Solutions, Envision, Milner-Fenwick and Wired.MD.

The package also includes content that was produced by GetWellNetwork for the exclusive use of GetWellNetwork clients. The GetWellNetwork Regulations Package contains more than 60 video titles and can be licensed by GetWellNetwork client hospitals. The videos are then available to patients and families through the GetWellNetwork PatientLife System at the bedside.

'Hospitals are struggling to find effective and efficient ways to address the growing number of regulations that are placed on them,' said Heather Townsend, director of patient education at GetWellNetwork. 'Over the last nine months, GetWellNetwork has collaborated with our clients and content partners to develop this package of videos that will address nearly 100 percent of the current requirements that can be impacted by patient education.'

Through the GetWellNetwork PatientLife System, patients are encouraged to watch informative multimedia videos on topics that address the relevant regulations. The patent-pending technology delivers an alert to the patient's television monitor that requests the patient to watch the video(s). The patient's response can then be recorded in the hospital's documentation system to complete the patient's record and reported to the regulation organization.

'GetWellNetwork has put together a fabulous and affordable package of education material that Sentara can make available to our patients through the GetWellNetwork system,' said Mark Beck, RN, MSN, director of surgical and family maternity services, Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center. 'When I first reviewed the package, it was clear that GetWellNetwork had done its homework. By bringing together the best resources that help us effectively meet the requirements of the Joint Commission, National Patient safety Goals, as well as address the objectives of IHI and Hospital Compare, Sentara is well positioned to provide up-to-date education materials to our patients, directly engaging them in their own care and keeping them safe and informed.'

The GetWellNetwork system empowers patients and families by placing them at the center of their own care experience. The system turns the television in the patient room into an interactive resource during a hospital stay. By using a wireless keyboard, touch screen or handheld device, patients can interact with the system to access valuable education, communication and entertainment tools directly at the bedside.

'One of the most critical issues facing healthcare providers is compliance with goals and standards under organizations such as the Joint Commission,' said Mark Anderson, CEO and healthcare IT futurist of AC Group. 'To stay ahead of the curve, healthcare organizations must have effective programs and technologies in place to ensure that quality and safety goals are met in an efficient way. Targeted patient education content and delivery is a key to meeting the requirements and objectives of the regulatory organizations.'
