Head of ultrasound appointed at the Garden Hospital

BMI Healthcare : 01 April, 2014  (Company News)
BMI Healthcare facility gains the advantage of recruiting a renowned expert in ultrasound to its clinical diagnostic services team
Head of ultrasound appointed at the Garden Hospital

BMI The Garden Hospital announces that Bill Smith, Head of Ultrasound at Clinical Diagnostic Services has been granted practising privileges and will strengthen the hospital’s imaging and diagnostic team.

Clinical Diagnostic Services is an established ultrasound scanning service which was set up in 1990.  Bill Smith and the Clinical Diagnostic Services team are well known worldwide and highly regarded for their work in clinical ultrasound and their contribution to post-graduate training and lecturing internationally.

Bill Smith qualified in medical ultrasound in 1978 whilst working at Kings College Hospital in London, within the ultrasound unit headed by Professor Stuart Campbell. He was Head of the obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound unit at The Royal Free Hospital in London from 1979-1982 before moving into the private sector to specialise in reproductive gynaecology and early pregnancy assessment. During his career, spanning more than 40 years he has been involved in the development of many, now routine, ultrasound scanning techniques including transvaginal scanning and associated advanced imaging technologies.

In 2009 he received the inaugural Peter Twining Memorial Medal awarded by British Medical Ultrasound Society (BMUS) in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the technical and clinical development of ultrasound.  He was also elected onto BMUS Council, the body responsible for overseeing medical ultrasound practice within the UK.  Bill Smith remains very highly respected for his technical expertise and clinical knowledge in key areas of medical ultrasound.

“It is a great pleasure to be joining the team at BMI The Garden Hospital,” Bill Smith commented. “My team are looking forward to working alongside the Consultant Gynaecologists, promoting high quality women’s healthcare services in the local Hendon and North London community. The ultrasound imaging technology and scanning experience we offer can significantly increase the diagnostic accuracy and early detection of gynaecological issues such as pelvic pain and endometriosis, abnormal uterine bleeding, ovarian and other pelvic cancers.  They also have a major impact in the investigation and management of infertility and recurrent miscarriage, as well as assessment of early pregnancy and prenatal diagnosis”.

Clinical Diagnostic Services are regarded as pioneers in the development of transvaginal scanning including colour flow mapping (blood flow), 3D and 4D volumetric imaging, contrast studies, advanced ultrasound hysteroscopy and ultrasound-assisted surgical procedures.

“Bill Smith and his team are a welcome addition to BMI The Garden Hospital.  Our consultant gynaecologists have been particularly impressed by him, his work, and the level of detail he can achieve with modern, state-of-the-art scanning techniques.  Women’s health is a big focus for clinicians and the team at BMI The Garden Hospital and on behalf of everyone at the hospital I would like to welcome Bill and the Clinical Diagnostic Services team into our fold.”
