Increased demand for mobility products as population ages

Karma Mobility : 10 December, 2013  (Technical Article)
With more centenarians living in the UK, the country is rapidly approaching higher requirements for products that assist mobility
Increased demand for mobility products as population ages

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) Britain is rapidly becoming a nation of centenarians, with new figures showing that a staggering 12,320 people living in England and Wales are over 100 years old, compared to just 2,560 in 1982. It has also been estimated that 610 of these are over 105-years-old! It comes as no surprise then that companies like Karma Mobility are on hand to help with mobility products such as wheelchairs and powerchairs for those who need them.

Mark Duffield, General Manager, Karma Mobility, said: “With more and more people celebrating their 100th birthdays, it is imperative they have the right mobility products to suit individual requirements. Some may need wheelchairs and others may need powerchairs for that extra bit of help and assistance in moving around.

“Choosing the right wheelchair or powerchair can be daunting and finding a retailer who can give you the correct assessment and advice is vital – this is what we are here to help with. For example, self propelled wheelchairs are suitable for those who want to and can propel a wheelchair on their own, without assistance, whereas a transit wheelchair is best for those who are unable to propel themselves and need assistance. Powerchairs can, depending on the type, be driven on the road as well as the pavement, and are ideal for people who want to retain their independence but may not have the strength to manage a self propelled wheelchair. Our retailers are trained to provide independent advice on choosing a good wheelchair or powerchair for individual requirements.”

With implications for change in future pensions, social and health care policies along with the organisation of the workplace, communities and families, these new figures have further highlighted the importance of having a good mobility aid or aids in order to have an improved quality of life as people enter their tenth decade. Having a wheelchair or powerchair can help to combat problems associated with very old age, such as multiple medical conditions as well as loneliness and isolation, by helping the user to maintain their independence, social life and staying active by getting out and about.

If budgets are tight, the inexpensive yet lightweight Bluebird Travel Chair is cost effective enough to purchase and small enough to fold away when not in use. Its lightweight 10kg (22lbs) frame makes it easy to transport and fits into the smallest of car boots, leaving plenty of room for additional luggage and ensuring users can enjoy days out. For those who want powerchairs, the new Blazer is a compact indoor and outdoor powerchair which can be adjusted to suit the user's needs, whilst the Ergo Traveller is great to take on holidays and trips away as it can be quickly taken apart into four manageable components to make travelling easy.
