Innovative wristband solution offers patient safety benefits

MSoft ESolutions : 14 November, 2012  (Application Story)
Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust is turning to healthcare technology specialist MSoft eSolutions to increase Positive Patient Identification (PPI) by introducing an innovative wristband solution on to its wards to meet stringent Government requirements on patient safety.

Earlier in 2012, the Department of Health published an updated 'Never Events' list for hospital trusts which included the misidentification of patients.

MSoft's wristband printing solution - which uses Zebra HC100 printers - seamlessly integrates with the trust's existing Patient Administration System (PAS) to generate the information required. The benefit to the trust is that the printing of wristbands can be achieved through a web-based ward interface rather than via the more complex PAS.

The implementation of the system means that MSoft is now providing the trust with the complete blood-tracking solution having earlier this year won the tender to implement its Bloodhound software.

The technology controls access to and from all blood fridges, while the company's bedside management system allows each bar-coded blood unit to be matched with the patient's bar-coded wristband in a matter of seconds.

The systems provide further enhanced security and safety by ensuring that only approved staff are allowed to access blood. The firm's blood tracking solution provides positive identification of users and patients and in depth auditing of all bloods across each and every stage of the transfusion process - to help get the right blood into the right patient.

In a first for MSoft, the Trust asked the company to provide a dedicated on-site employee to help oversee all aspects of the implementation, support and training.

Matt McAlister, Managing Director of MSoft eSolutions, said: "We are delighted to have won this second tender with Brighton and Sussex because it now means we are providing the trust with a 360 degree solution from issuing a patient with their wristband on arrival through to the transfusion of blood into the patient".

"Along the way our Bloodhound solution is involved in a number of other vital steps including the taking of blood samples, sending to the lab for analysis, cross-matching blood samples with the patient and ensuring positive patient identification on ward".

"The Government's recently updated list of 'Never Events' makes it clearer than ever that the misidentification of patients is totally unacceptable.

"The fact that we have won more than £2million worth of tenders with NHS Trusts in the past year confirms that hospital senior management understand the importance of ensuring improved patient safety is at the top of their agenda."

Apart from Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust, other trusts to have commissioned MSoft in the past year include East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust, Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and East Cheshire NHS Trust and Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust.
