LABORATORY AND ANALYTICAL – OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY

FOCUS ZONE REPORT A new high speed imaging capability is being added to Michelson Diagnostics’ EX1301 OCT Microscope which is designed to reveal microscopic detail below the surface of tissue samples instantly, without affecting or damaging them, and with no special preparation.
The high resolution EX1301 Ex Vivo Microscope is capable of capturing Optical Coherence Tomography images at up to 40 frames per second, enabling imaging of dynamic processes such as the heartbeat of a fruit-fly.

The new high-speed processing software is four times faster than the previous version, and was originally developed for MDL’s new hand-held OCT scanner, which is due for launch in late spring/early summer 2009. Actual frame rates depend on the image width: from 7.5 fps (image width 1,250 pixels), to 40 fps (image width 125 pixels).

“We believe that this capability will prove very useful for biologists, for example those who are researching the genetic origins of heart disease”, said Jon Holmes, MDL’s Chief Executive Officer, “The high frame rate, coupled with market-leading optical resolution from our patented Multi-Beam OCT optics, in an off-the-shelf package, will open up new opportunities for the developmental biology scientist”

Michelson Diagnostics' Ex Vivo Microscope is ideal for clinical and material science research applications and is designed for laboratory use on excised tissue (skin, oesophageal and cervical), complete organs and scientific materials, the bench-top scanner is an ideal solution for the researcher who needs to see inside a specimen but cannot afford to alter or damage it in any way.

The system’s multi-beam technology, which delivers near cellular resolution, offers a fast frame rate with 7mm scan width and 1.5mm depth of field.
