Marengo Memorial Hospital deploys McKesson’s Paragon community HIS to improve rural patient care

McKesson UK : 19 August, 2008  (Application Story)
Marengo Memorial Hospital is to deploy McKesson’s Paragon community hospital information system (HIS) as part of a plan to use technology to improve patient care and operational efficiency to better serve its largely rural service region.
The 25-bed critical access hospital (CAH) in Marengo, Iowa, USA, also will roll out McKesson’s Practice Partner fully integrated electronic health record (EHR) and Practice management solution to connect the hospital with its nearby outpatient clinic. The initiative will create a secure, up-to-date electronic patient record that can be accessed by authorised care givers regardless of where the patient receives care in the hospital’s community.

By selecting the affordable and highly-rated Paragon HIS solution, Marengo will have the tools needed to deploy a comprehensive EHR solution that provides easy to use clinicals for increased Patient safety and financial management capabilities. The Paragon solution utilises Microsoft Technology that reduces training time because of user familiarity with the Microsoft Windows interface. Reduced training for new and existing employees, along with other non-propriety technology, reduces the hospital's total cost of ownership. The integrated IT solution is constructed on technology that offers the hospital the ability to streamline processes from scheduling and registration through final payment. It also provides administrators with greater insight on hospital operations.

“Paragon was an easy choice because it’s built for critical access and community hospitals,” said Nancy Kohrt, chief financial officer, Marengo. “If we had to look to the larger systems to get this kind of functionality, we would not have been able to afford them.”

Physicians and nurse practitioners in Marengo’s outpatient clinic will have integrated access to the EHR, thanks to McKesson’s Practice Partner Patient Records, an award-winning certified ambulatory EHR for medical practices. Patient information including hospital test results will be readily available to the caregiver from within the EHR, and outpatient physician orders will flow to the hospital. The system also offers a note-centric design for quick and easy charting. With ready access to the right information at the right time and improved documentation at the point of contact, physicians can make safer, more informed decisions as they treat patients ultimately helping to improve outcomes.

“One of our primary goals is to improve service to the patient,” said Kohrt. “The integration between Paragon and Practice Partner means that a patient can go to the clinic, register once there, come over to the hospital, have further services performed and not have to go through the whole registration process again.”

Implementing modern healthcare technology is just one aspect of Marengo’s ongoing programme to offer higher levels of service to patients who otherwise might be forced to travel to larger hospitals in neighboring cities.

“McKesson understands that the success of community hospitals is critical to patients receiving both local and personal high quality care,” said Duncan James, group president, Health Systems Solutions, McKesson Provider Technologies. “And we are focused on providing specific solutions that benefit the community setting.”
