MEDICAL DEVICE TECHNOL0GY – REGIONAL FOCUS

Medilink West Midlands : 31 March, 2009  (Special Report)
FOCUS ZONE REPORT – Medilink West Midlands is an organization that brings together innovators from across the West Midlands region of the UK and works with leading component manufacturers, product developers and medical suppliers to showcase cutting edge technologies, products and services.
MedilinkWM has been a long time supporter of the Medtec UK exhibition and the organisation’s stand at Medtec UK 2009 provides a microcosm of what medical device technology companies in the West Midlands have to offer:

Advanced Therapeutic Materials
Expanding the company’s operation in Coventry, Advanced Therapeutic Materials is developing an improved delivery process of compression therapy, a tailor-made garment for sufferers of conditions including ulceration, lymphoedema and DVT. Advanced 3D imaging and prescription software is also being trialled by clinicians to produce seamless compression garments that can deliver precise pressures accurately and reliably over the whole treatment area. Clinicians can check that the correct pressures are applied according to their prescription and monitor the clinical progress of patients.

AKI Medical Moulding
Certified to ISO 13485, AKI Medical Moulding provides design, development and value-added injection moulding solutions to Europe’s medical device and laboratory equipment manufacturers, including cleanroom assembly and insert moulding, gas-assisted moulding and two-shot moulding of different polymers or colours. AKI also partners Pera in major European medical innovation projects.

Arrow Medical
Arrow Medical's manufacturing services extend from silicone injection moulding, textile processing and radio frequency welding to complete clean room assembly, contract packaging, and full logistics support for the sterile supply chain. Complete products are manufactured to ISO 13485 and FDA GMP standards for cardiology, anaesthesiology, vascular systems, emergency trauma, and breathing equipment. Arrow's services include design support and production engineering, with more than 15,000ft2 of production facilities at Kington, Herefordshire, UK.

Clamason Industries
At Medtec UK 2009, Clamason Industries announced new contract with the world’s third largest drugs company, Sanofi-Aventis. Showcasing its work for the pharmaceutical giant, Clamason Industries demonstrated the new SoloStar insulin pen, which contains the Midlands company’s complex indexing washer that allows the user to accurately dial and dispense the correct dosage of insulin. With plants at Kingswinford (West Midlands) and Nitra (Slovakia), Clamason Industries makes pressed metal, precision components for world-class medical devices.

Magellan Technology (Europe)
Magellan Technology is set to launch an RFID based low cost mobile phone for mobile health workers, currently being trialled by a key UK health organisation. The development builds on its successful technologies for the management of Orthopeadic loaner kits, which are currently being rolled out worldwide by Zimmer and Stryker, using RFID tags and systems within the clinical and inventory management processes in hospitals. The technology enables firms and hospitals to track implantable orthopaedics and monitor availability, use and returns.

Micro Spring and Presswork
Micro Spring and Presswork is a specialist manufacturer of a wide range of springs, presswork and assemblies for the medical industry. From tungsten carbide filament used in cartilage operations to stainless steel panels for anaesthetic equipment, Micro Spring and Presswork has a wealth of experience partnering with OEMs to produce quality components for often complex and demanding applications. The factory offers stress relieving and in-house tooling design and manufacture equipped with powerful CAD CAM equipment and the latest tool production machinery.

Physiological Measurements
The Football Association’s approved cardiology screening specialist, Physiological Measurements, showcased its new mobile VO2 Max testing and motion analysis system at Medtec UK 2009. The new service, in addition to ECG and echocardiogram services, provides comprehensive diagnostic testing for all professional athletes. Working with Primary Care Trusts providing community echocardiography and ECG services, Physiological Measurements Ltd has been effective in greatly reducing patient waiting times, increasing speed of treatment and enabling remote viewing of image files.

Primasil Silicones
At Medtec UK 2009 Primasil Silicones launched an innovative new laser etching process that allows information to be displayed on platinum cured silicone tubing. For the first time, part numbers, batch numbers or use by dates can be permanently etched onto a medical tube, safely and efficiently using a process, ‘SureTrace’, which has no effect on the performance of the tube.

Tecvac
Tecvac specialises in Nitron coatings using 'biologically inert' ultra hard materials such as titanium nitride, and bio-compatibles such as pure gold and silver, to coat implants, medical instruments, probes and accessories. Tecvac has also recently developed a set of new, low temperature plasma processing technologies that allow plastic surfaces to be sterilised, coated or modified to the highest clinical standards, to ensure biocompatible solutions.

Zybert Computing
Zybert Computing’s Secure Portable Office Key (SPOK) made its debut at Medtec UK 2009. Allowing authorized clinicians to access patient records from any global location, without leaving a trace of the confidential data, the SPOK initiates an encrypted, secure connection to the specific data required, without copying the record. Removing the need for a central database, the SPOK enhances the reliability and effectiveness of data management in a changing healthcare service.
