New moderate sedation training solution is unveiled

Medical Simulation : 30 April, 2008  (Company News)
Medical Simulation (MSC) is to launch a new, comprehensive Moderate Sedation Program at the USA's premier nursing conference, the National Teaching Institute (NTI) and Critical Care Exposition, May 3-8, 2008 in Chicago, Illinois.
MSC is introducing the Moderate Sedation Program as the first offering in a full menu of training solutions that address current national quality and Patient safety initiatives.

During moderate sedation, sedative and analgesic medications are used to diminish patient anxiety and discomfort in order to facilitate certain diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. The patient does not lose consciousness and maintains an open airway and spontaneous breathing. Many procedures that used to be performed with general anaesthesia or sedation by an anaesthesiologist, including colonoscopy, cardiac catheterization, minor surgery and some dental procedures, are now frequently performed with moderate sedation.

Recent data suggests that there are at least 1,690 incidents a year related to sedation-ranging from an overdose of drugs to a procedure that is started before a patient is adequately sedated. MSC's Moderate Sedation Program can help healthcare teams be better prepared to address the issues surrounding the administration of medications to achieve moderate sedation.

The MSC Moderate Sedation Program not only educates participants on the general guidelines surrounding the use of moderate sedation, but also incorporates simulation using a lifelike human patient simulator that allows participants to practice airway management and decision-making skills during example case scenarios. MSC has designed multiple training options to meet the needs of different healthcare teams, and the programme allows hospital educators to customise course content to match their facilities' specific policies and procedures regarding the administration of moderate sedation.

Tamara Stoner, MD, clinical assistant professor of anaesthesiology and former chair of the Sedation Task Force at the University of Colorado Hospital in Denver and Moderate Sedation program author said, 'Given the increasing number of procedures in which sedative medications are administered without an anesthesiologist present or immediately available, healthcare professionals caring for these patients need to be better prepared to prevent and address potential complications associated with moderate sedation.'

'MSC's Moderate Sedation Program is designed to increase the competence and confidence of any healthcare team member associated with the care of patients who receive medication to achieve moderate sedation, including nurses, technologists and physicians,' added Bill Younkes, MSC president.

Demonstrations of the Moderate Sedation Program will be offered at the MSC booth 2060 at the NTI and Critical Care Exposition.
