NHS trust takes new image archiving system

McKesson Imaging & Workflow Solutions : 08 June, 2015  (Application Story)

NHS trust takes new image archiving system

Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust has selected McKesson’s cardiovascular information solution, McKesson Cardiology, as its new image archiving system and to facilitate more efficient workflows around the sharing and review of echo and other images.

Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust provides a range of medical services to approximately 420,000 people living across southwest London and northeast Surrey. The Trust owns and runs four hospitals and provides services from other local health centres. Its echocardiography services are provided across two sites, St Helier Hospital and Epsom Hospital, by a team that includes four consultant cardiologists, junior doctors and cardiac physiologists, clinical nurse specialists, and specialist cardiac rehabilitation nurses.

Prior to implementing McKesson CVIS, Epsom and St Helier had an in-house developed image archiving system, whereby all images were stored locally then archived and backed up in the IT department. The images were only accessible in the echocardiography department, requiring consultants to be on site to review them. “We wanted a more robust system, but also one that would give the entire care team timely access to all the relevant information that they need, at the right time to help expedite patient care,” comments Fiona Goulder, Lead Cardiac Physiologist (Echocardiography), Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust.

“The accessibility of the web-based McKesson solution means that our consultants can review images whilst in clinics and on the wards. It is a more time efficient and convenient solution.”

Looking ahead, Epsom and St Helier will use McKesson CVIS across both its departments, with all types of images available on one single system, providing a whole view of the patient. In addition, McKesson’s tele-cardiology functionality will enable image sharing and transfer between the Trust’s tertiary referral.

“Ultimately, it is about providing optimal care services for our patients,” Fiona says. “And that means having the technology and processes in place that support our clinical staff to do their jobs in the most efficient and effective way.”

Maureen Gardner, Clinical Lead, McKesson adds, “Our implementation methodology and the design of the McKesson Cardiology CVIS solution allow us to meet the individual needs of our customers. We worked closely with the team at Epsom and St Helier to understand their specific requirements so that we could ensure the solution would support the local workflow and BSE requirements, and also to understand and agree the process at implementation phase.”

The Trust went live with McKesson Cardiology in its echo lab in September 2014, following tight implementation schedule that saw both the Trust’s and McKesson’s IT teams collaborating closely.
