Olympus produces a handy guide to the NPSA Patient Safety Programme

Olympus UK : 04 September, 2008  (Company News)
Olympus UK has produced a handy guide to the NPSA Patient Safety Programme to aid NHS organisations in the implementation of the guidelines.
In July 2007, the National Patient safety Agency (NPSA) issued its ‘Safer Practice Notice: Standardising wristbands improves patient safety’ to all NHS organisations in England and Wales.

The Safer Practice Notice recommends the action required by NHS organisations in England and Wales in order to standardise wristbands by July 2008, with the final clause to ‘Generate and print all patient wristbands from the hospital demographic system’ to be completed by July 2009.

Across the NHS, wristbands are used to identify hospital inpatients and are essential in ensuring the right patient is matched to the care intended for them. Over a 12 month period from February 2006 to January 2007, the NPSA received 24,382 reports of patients being misidentified and mismatched to their care and it is estimated that 2,900 of these were directly related to the use of wristbands. As a result the NPSA has recommended that standardising the design of patient wristbands, the information on them, and the processes used to produce and check them, will improve patient safety.

The executive briefings booklet sponsored by Olympus UK serves to inform chief executives, Trust managers and healthcare professionals of the important points discussed in the NPSA Safer Practice Notice, what it means in practice and what can be done to achieve the action recommended.
