Olympus UK provides early career scientists an opportunity to use high-value microscopy

Olympus Life Science Europa - Microscopy : 26 June, 2008  (Company News)
The Olympus Early Career Scientist Microscopy Award was launched at Microscience 2008 in London, UK, and offers early career life scientists the opportunity to acquire the long-term loan of a high-value Olympus microscopy system for their research.
The competition is aimed at life science researchers who are resident in the UK and who hold either personal fellowships or are within three years of their first tenured academic appointment and have not yet secured substantial grant funding. The equipment on offer ranges from a basic light Microscope to a highly-specified FluoView 1000 confocal Microscopy system, which will be loaned and supported for a period of two years.

The Olympus Early Career Scientist Microscopy Award will allow the successful applicant unrestricted use of an imaging resource to which they may otherwise have little or no access. Olympus will install, insure and maintain the equipment, as well as provide full training. As a result, securing this unique opportunity will increase the standing and future capacity of the successful candidate’s laboratory.

Nick Claxton, general manager, Olympus Microscopy UK commented, “Microscopy has undergone a renaissance in recent years and Olympus has developed a range of highly complex systems to aid the advancement of science. By providing access to such essential instruments, this award will help early career life scientists reach their full potential and exceed their research goals”.

The judging panel will be comprise independent scientists as well as representatives from Olympus UK and Olympus Life Science Europa. The goal of the judging panel is to determine high-quality project proposals where the loan of the equipment will have most impact and be a clear benefit to the up-and-coming career life scientist. All information received will be treated as strictly confidential and will not be transmitted to any third party.

Depending on the range of applications received, several basic Microscopy awards may be made, or one large award of a high-end system.

The closing date for all applications is 30th September 2008 and successful applicants will be notified by 31st October 2008, for installation in January 2009.

Application forms are available at or from Olympus UK and the closing date is 30th September 2008.
