Opthalmology master classes for GPs

BMI Healthcare : 10 March, 2014  (Company News)
BMI the Garden Hospital is providing local doctors with master classes in ophthalmology for eye condition diagnostics
Opthalmology master classes for GPs

Patients at BMI The Garden Hospital have helped medical consultants provide local Hendon GPs with hands-on focused ophthalmology master class covering some of the UK’s most prevalent and hard to diagnose eye conditions.

The event, which was driven by feedback from GPs, took place over the course of an evening and attendees were granted access to focused sessions from some of the hospitals leading consultant ophthalmologists and ophthalmic surgeons. The consultants, Mr Daniel Ezra, Miss Jennifer Forbes, Miss Samantha Levin and Mr Timothy Fallon, were joined by current and former patients who had been diagnosed with specific diseases to allow the GP delegates perform real time consultations and hone their skills in disease identification and diagnosis. During the evening GPs rotated between the consultant and patient and were offered specialist master classes in focused disease areas that included: Horner’s Syndrome, giant cell arteritis, glaucoma and macular drusen.

“Having patient based educational events such as this is a great way for consultants to meet with and share knowledge with our leading GP colleagues across Hendon,” commented Mr Daniel Ezra Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital and BMI The Garden Hospital. "Often GP education events can be repetitive, and using purely didactic teaching methods can mean that important teaching material is difficult to retain. In this instance however the patients allowed us to provide the GPs with a fully interactive master class that was truly hands-on, reflecting the process of a real life consultation in their own GP practice. The whole event was a great success and demonstrates the demand for ongoing medical education and communication. It is vitally important for we as consultants to meet with GPs in this way. On behalf of all the consultants involved I would like to thank everyone at BMI The Garden Hospital and most of all the patients and GPs who attended for making the evening so productive.” Mr Ezra concluded.

The event which took place at BMI The Garden Hospital was attended by more than 30 GP delegates, speaking on the success of the event BMI The Garden Hospital’s Executive Director Philip Eke commented, “GPs are at the front line of healthcare in the UK and BMI The Garden Hospital is dedicated to the provision of GP focused events, such as this, to help inform and enrich their learning and medical skills. As a medical practitioner you are continually learning and we hope that the ophthalmology master class that Mr Ezra and his team facilitated will help more GPs achieve an accurate diagnosis for their patients at a much earlier stage.”
