SCAS selects McKesson Shared Services support HR and payroll function

McKesson UK : 30 June, 2008  (Application Story)
South Central Ambulance Services (SCAS) NHS Trust has selected McKesson Shared Services to support its HR and Payroll function, providing a complete end-to-end ESR service offering from the healthcare services provider.
Following a tender process for its HR and Payroll services, SCAS chose McKesson Shared Services, allowing them to benefit from the security of working with the guardians of the ESR solution.

SCAS provides a response to 999 medical emergency calls. Through investment in more staff, newer vehicles and improved ways of working, SCAS is aiming to reach emergencies even faster in the future, helping improve outcomes for patients and ultimately saving more lives. This drive to increase efficiencies and speed of response touches every aspect of the organization and was a major instigator for ensuring that the support provided to employees working in Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire and Berkshire was of the highest quality, as well as ensuring consistency of data offered by the organization that delivered ESR.

McKesson’s centralised approach to managing the consolidation of first level support and administration tasks associated with the day-to-day functions of HR and Payroll is unrivalled. Natalie Edwards, ESR and IMT programme manager, South Central Ambulance Services NHS Trust explained, “We went out to tender last September and selected McKesson Shared Services due to the high level of service delivery offered, and the positive experiences that we have had working alongside McKesson on previous projects, in particular ESR. When looking for a provider, we knew that they needed to be well grounded in ESR, as it is central to what we are doing at SCAS. We have come to refer to ESR as our ‘single source of truth’ and needed to work with a provider who could offer us a true partnership.”

Natalie Edwards explained why it was vital to ensure that SCAS work with a motivated and responsive service provider, “It really matters to us that our staff get paid accurately and on time, particularly where shift work is concerned. If someone has worked a twelve hour shift involving a crisis or emergency that has meant extended hours, it is then paramount that this is reflected accurately in their salary.”

Charmaine McDonald, UK managing director, McKesson, commented, “The inception of McKesson Shared Services has enabled us to unlock the potential of the ESR system by providing an end-to-end service; whereby we are responsible for the system, all data and outputs. Now that McKesson is effectively a 'customer' of ESR through our bureau service aspect of the business as well as guardians of the system, it gives us the opportunity to walk a mile in the shoes of our customers to ensure the system is meeting and exceeding their needs. This service is a safe solution for our customers and allows us to deliver tangible service and efficiency improvements, which is a key objective in all our offerings.”

Edwards concluded, “McKesson Shared Services offers an unrivalled resource base where more people are working as part of our team, allowing greater efficiency and productivity throughout our organization. This allows existing staff to focus on strategic planning and development rather than back office activity and opens up their own career development opportunities through ESR such as Manager Direct Access and Oracle Learning Management. Using one interface in McKesson we can reduce paper output and improve accuracy across the HR and Payroll function. We understand that payroll is very much a two-way street and if your input is good, your output will work for you – in McKesson we have found a partner who works with us to ensure quality data.”

McDonald concluded, “McKesson’s knowledge, proven capability and expertise will support NHS organisations such as South Central Ambulance Services NHS Trust in moving HR and Payroll departments forward, in-line with the Government’s Transformation strategy but perhaps more importantly, ensure valuable HR and payroll staff are enabled, to focus on valued-added activity, with the comfort that their back-office administration is in safe hands.”
