SLaM offers secure online referrals for specialist services

South London And Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust : 11 October, 2010  (Company News)
The South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) is launching a secure online referral system for health professionals, making it the first hospital of its kind in the United Kingdom to offer online referrals for specialist services.
Health professionals can now refer online patients from anywhere in the United Kingdom to SLaM’s national and specialist mental health services. The new online resource is available at www.national.slam.nhs.uk

Jill Lockett, SLaM’s Lead for National Services, who described the new online referral service as a completely secure and modern referral option, said: “Our new national services website is aimed at GPs, psychiatrists, and commissioners, and provides busy health professionals a simple, and secure, option for referring people from across the United Kingdom to SLaM.”

“We hope health practitioners and commissioners find our new website and directory of national services useful, and we look forward to working together to help to improve the lives of people who need specialist mental health services.”

The Web site also profiles SLaM’s many experts and provides comprehensive information to help navigate SLaM specialist services. The Web site is regularly updated with news, blog posts and media releases, as well as profiling SLaM in the media.

SLaM’s online referral system is completely secure, and is also compliant the confidential management of patient information. The Web site also provides a step-by-step overview of how to complete an online referral.

Lockett said the Web site profiles each of SLaM’s 50 national and specialist services.

“Each adult and child and adolescent mental health (CAMHS) service is profiled online, with information on individual care options and costs, eligibility criteria, interventions and outcomes,” Lockett explained.

“The Web site also features a number of case studies profiling the experiences of former patients, and carers.”

The new Web site complements the national services directories, comprehensive hard copy guides to SLaM’s adults and CAMHS specialist mental health services which are available to people from anywhere in the United Kingdom. Like the Web site, the directories profile national services, eligibility, treatments provided, expected outcomes, and individual care options, including costs.

SLaM offers the most extensive portfolio of mental health services in the United Kingdom, supported by internationally recognised training and research. Each year, 5000 people receive hospital treatment, and 32,000 receive outpatient care. SLaM offers over 300 services, including over 50 specialist services that are available to anyone from across the United Kingdom.

SLaM’s focus is on promoting mental health and well-being, rather than simply responding to severe mental illness. The provision of integrated child, adolescent and adult services enables the Trust to address mental health and social care needs. In particular, SLaM is focusing on early intervention, getting help to people sooner in the course of illnesses such as psychosis and dementia, and in supporting people with mental health problems at an earlier stage in their lives, especially younger people.

Paul Calaminus, Service Director for SLaM’s Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, said the new website and directories had made navigating the services and referring online easy for health professionals.

“The directories and website include named contacts, phone and fax numbers, and emails of the people you need to get in touch with in each service. They will be very happy to help with enquiries and referrals.”

The SLaM has also produced a number of detailed booklets profiling individual services, including psychosis, psychosexual and relationship, centre for anxiety and trauma, eating disorders inpatient, and also a booklet on SLaM’s occupational therapy programmes.
