St James’s Institute of Oncology opens with first T class MRI system in the UK

Siemens Healthcare UK : 07 August, 2008  (Company News)
HRH The Princess Royal has opened the St James’s Institute of Oncology in the new Bexley Wing at St James’s University Hospital in Leeds.
The new facility, which was completed just before Christmas 2007, is now fully operational and thousands of patients have already been treated in the state-of-the-art cancer centre. Amongst the range of innovative medical equipment installed at the institute is a Magnetom Avanto MRI from Siemens Healthcare. The centre is also using CT, X-ray and Ultrasound systems from Siemens to assist in the diagnosis of patients.

The Magnetom Avanto 1.5T MRI was one of the first T class systems to be installed in the UK and provides a high level of image quality, ideal for detailed inspection of tissue structures in oncology screening. The system is also designed to ensure optimum patient comfort, reducing anxiety with an inviting design and low table position. Its wide bore enables feet-first examinations for nearly all MR procedures to create a more relaxed scanning environment for patients and provide better results for diagnosis.

“The purpose-built Institute of Oncology at the Bexley Wing is already impacting on the treatment and care of patients from across the local area,” said Julie Shepherd, MR product manager at Siemens Healthcare. “Siemens is delighted to be a part of this initiative, providing MR imaging solutions that will complement the advanced new facilities and enhance diagnosis.”
