St Thomas invests in pocket-sized ultrasound for digital stethoscope examinations

Siemens Healthcare UK : 20 June, 2008  (Application Story)
Three Siemens Acuson P10 ultrasound systems have been ordered by St Thomas’ Hospital, part of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, for use in the hospital’s cardiology applications.
The P10 is the first available handheld Ultrasound screening device, designed to provide faster care in critical situations and versatility in routine examinations. Weighing just 700g and compact in size, the system can be used in regular rounds and in trauma settings to provide high quality scan images.

The lightness and portability of the device opens the opportunities for digital stethoscope examinations. It is simple to use for screening and identification of cardiac conditions during a typical outpatient visit, or to identify life-threatening cardiac issues in emergency and triage environments. The non-invasive examinations via Ultrasound can eliminate some tests and provide instant images for review at the point of care. This speeds up diagnosis and shortens the investigation process for patients - thus improving outcomes and increasing throughput.

“The Acuson P10 Ultrasound system is a great innovation for many reasons. Not only is it lightweight and a convenient pocket-size, but it provides earlier, faster and more accurate clinical assessment at the point of care,” said Declan Dunphy, performance products manager at Siemens Healthcare. “The P10 can act as a digital stethoscope to assist in providing answers for triage decisions, bedside monitoring and traditional diagnosis.”

The P10 is designed for ease of use with an intuitive PDA-style user interface. The system is ready to use anywhere at anytime, with an industry standard USB port for sharing of information and upgrades. The system offers instant power-up, one hour battery life, high-quality black and white 2D-mode imaging with a 2-4 MHz phased array probe, an SD Memory Card slot and a dock/recharge station with a spare battery.

In addition to cardiology uses, the Acuson P10 can also be used for an array of applications in accident and emergency medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology. For example, it gives immediate insight in triage and can aid labour and delivery processes including, foetal viability, amniotic fluid volume, placental abnormalities, multiple gestations and unexplained bleeding.
