Telanetix equips four medical facilities with new telepresence systems

Telanetix : 24 January, 2008  (New Product)
Telanetix has installed the company’s Digital Presence products in four medical facilities affiliated with a major university.
The installation of the systems makes it possible for field specialists and consulting physicians to teach and be called upon for consultations remotely, in real-time with life-like interaction. The room-based solutions provided by Telanetix also incorporate data-sharing from a wide array of sources, such as x-rays and ultrasounds, allowing the university to utilise the full array of expertise on its staff, regardless of which location that staff member is stationed.

Digital Presence's ability to integrate with the customer's existing software allows the hospitals to share content in high definition and in real time. The content includes everything from slide presentations to live radiology content. The systems have also allowed the University to open up new choices for students in the intern programme by eliminating the travel requirements that previously served as an obstacle.

'Radiology in particular has very demanding requirements for the quality of their imaging,' said Rob Arnold, chief technology officer of Telanetix. 'We are pleased to be able to exceed those requirements by supporting up to true 1080P resolution at a full 60 frames per second, and doing so without losing any visual quality, which is critical in particular aspects of telemedicine.'

Telanetix's Digital Presence is a technology that creates a fully immersive and interactive environment that integrates audio, video, and data from multiple locations into a single environment regardless of geographic boundaries. The display screens deliver full size, face-to-face images of real-time video, audio, and data in high quality resolution at up to 60 frames per second. This creates an experience that is realistic that users feel as if they are all present in the same room.

The Telanetix technology includes advanced encoders, decoders, traffic shaping, data sharing on a flexible hardware and software platform.

Telanetix has effectively replaced the endpoints and central videoconferencing bridge of legacy systems with a high quality, decentralised IP solution. Operation is simplified through the user interface that is intuitive and easy to use, and the system does not require a dedicated network.

'The medical industry is an important vertical market for Telanetix, and this installation builds our momentum in the field,' said Tom Szabo, chairman and CEO of Telanetix. 'This prestigious institution validates our technology within the medical community and will serve as an example of how telepresence can be implemented across various disciplines within the community. Additionally, our Digital Presence allows doctors and field specialists to interact with student and patients as if they were actually in the same room.'
