Texan research centre deploys IVIS Spectrum imaging system to focus on TB treatments

The Texas A and M Health Science Center Research Foundation (HSCRF) is using the Caliper Life Sciences IVIS Spectrum imaging system to speed the development of more effective therapeutic treatments for tuberculosis.
Research efforts and the purchase of the IVIS system are funded through a grant to the Texas A and M Health Science Center from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Tuberculosis currently affects nearly one-third of the world's population and remains a global threat due to severe and drug-resistant strains. According to the World Health Organization, tuberculosis is one of the most serious infectious diseases in the world. Caliper is dedicated to assisting the global fight against infectious diseases and aiding the discovery of life-saving treatments.

Researchers at the Texas A and M Health Science Center College of Medicine and a consortium of leading tuberculosis researchers at Washington University and Stanford University School of Medicine are actively studying tuberculosis infections in live animals using in vivo imaging technology. Caliper's IVIS Spectrum was specifically chosen for its highly sensitive luminescence detection and ability to successfully image, track and quantify tuberculosis infections using fluorescence.

The IVIS system enables researchers to visualise the progression of the disease and impact of therapeutic candidates in real time. The rapid evaluation of in vivo efficacy allows researchers to quickly adapt efforts and progress towards effective treatments for the disease.

'We are quite optimistic that this research collaboration will uncover new and promising discoveries in the fight against tuberculosis,' said Kevin Hrusovsky, chief executive officer of Caliper Life Sciences. 'Caliper's imaging technology has proven to be integral in other discovery efforts for finding new ways and treatments to combat infectious disease. This is a great opportunity to exploit Caliper's imaging technology to make a major impact in this world.'
