Two B Braun medical devices are selected for the iF product design award 2008

B.Braun Melsungen : 05 March, 2008  (New Product)
Two devices from the Aesculap Division of B. Braun Melsungen have been selected the iF product design award 2008, which has become one of the world’s most coveted design awards.
The OrthoPilot navigation system, which has already received other awards, and the battery powered Acculan 3Ti surgical motor system won through in the Medicine and Healthcare category against competition from all over the world.

The award ceremony took place at the CeBit in Hanover, Germany on 4 March 2008. This year an international panel of experts, who found the ergonomic construction and clear design vocabulary of the two B. Braun Aesculap products convincing, assessed around 2,800 entries from 35 countries.

OrthoPilot is a surgical navigation system that helps surgeons achieve exact positioning of knee and hip prostheses. With over 80,000 navigated operations since its first clinical application in 1997, OrthoPilot has established itself worldwide and set new standards. Prof Michael Ungethum, chairman of the executive board at Aesculap, explained its advantages: “It is OrthoPilot’s modularity, flexibility and ergonomics that makes the surgeon’s task easier.”

The next generation will be launched in the second quarter of 2008. The device will be the only system in the world that can be built up individually according to the customer’s wishes and requirements through the use of additional adaptable modules.

The other Aesculap prizewinner is Acculan 3Ti, the latest generation of the battery powered motor system for use in orthopaedics and traumatology as well as cardiothoracic surgery.

Acculan 3Ti is a powerful motor system that offers intuitive handling and satisfies the highest demands for reliability, long life and ergonomics. The integration of the control electronics into the detachable battery pack avoids steam sterilisation of the heat-sensitive battery cells and electronic components, thus extending the lifetime of the battery and reducing the hospital’s operational costs. The principle, combined with the titanium and stainless steel housing, makes the system long lasting and reliable.

The iF design award has been one of the most important design competitions in the world since 1954. Top international designers judge products in 12 categories, ranging from Consumer Electronics and Telecommunication, Household and Home, Recreation and Lifestyle, Industry and Buildings, Public and Interior Design to Transportation and Packaging. The jury’s assessment criteria include the degree of innovation, functionality, visualization of use, safety and environmental compatibility of the new product.

In addition to the presentation of the 50 iF gold awards, CeBIT also saw the opening of the iF exhibition, where the 821 prizewinners of this year’s award will be presented in Pavilion 36 and in the IC on the exhibition site. The iF Label has become a global brand with a high recognition factor, and for many years it has been a guarantor for the latest trends in design.
