University College London Hospitals wins 2007 FDBE / GHP IT Award

First DataBank Europe : 23 May, 2007  (New Product)
The 2007 First DataBank Europe Guild of Healthcare Pharmacists Information Technology Award (GHP IT) has been awarded to the Pharmacy Department at the University College London Hospitals (UCLH).
The project team was commended for its successful development of an easy to use, intranet-hosted formulary management system.

The annual award, which is in its fifth year, was set up to encourage, support and promote information technology initiatives and best practice in the use of IT in pharmacy. This year's winners designed a system to enable online access to the UCLH's widely acclaimed paper-based formulary and to host up to date drug-related clinical guidelines.

The judges were particularly impressed by the system's instantaneous updating, its easy access for staff members across the Trust, its speedy searching functionality and the improved efficiency and control of formulary administration, which has proved a vast improvement on the old paper-based formulary.

The impressive take up by staff across the Trust is testament to its success as users access the system to search for drug information, monographs and clinical guideline information. The system, which sits on the hospital's intranet, is used by a wide range of staff, but has been noted to be particularly useful for on-call staff.

Anthony Grosso, formulary pharmacist at UCLH said: 'The introduction of the 'Inform' Formulary Management System across our Hospitals has significantly improved medicines management and governance. The simplicity of its use has made it an instant hit amongst all end-users as the searching system caters to the need of a wide range of healthcare professionals. Currently, we are looking into ways of interfacing this system with our electronic prescribing software as 'Inform' is now the ultimate reference source for UCLH Formulary medicines, injectable administration and drug-related clinical guidelines.'

Neil Kirby, chair of the Guild of Healthcare Pharmacists IT Interest Group, enthused: 'We had a number of excellent submissions for this year's award. All the submissions indicate that there is a still a flourishing need for local developments to support local needs. Such local developments must complement and inform the debate around the implementation of national systems.'

Keith Kirtland, sales and marketing director at First DataBank Europe said: 'We are very pleased that this innovative project won the 2007 Award, and hope that the money will help UCLH develop the system even further. We can confirm that we will be offering the Award again in 2008, with the newly merged GHP / UKCPA IT Interest Group and we would encourage departments or individuals to enter their projects and continue to share good practice with others.'

The Pharmacy Department at UCLH will be formally presented with the award for 2,500 from First DataBank Europe at the GHP IT / UKCPS Interest Group Seminar at the Coventry Hilton in Coventry, UK, on June 6, 2007.
