Wheelchair cushion range pioneers new foam technology

Otto Bock Healthcare : 19 July, 2013  (New Product)
Ottobock is launching two new ranges of cushions for use with wheelchairs.
Wheelchair cushion range pioneers new foam technology

The Terra and the Aerial ranges are designed to offer comfort and durability for wheelchair users in the UK.

The new Terra range of cushions is made from Rest Suspension Foam, a new generation polyurethane that brings a new solution to the UK market. The foam readily conforms to the user's anatomy to reduce peak pressures, and has a longer lifespan than traditional high resilience polyurethane foam cushions.

The Terra cushions are ideal for those who value comfort, protection and durability as they adapt to the shape of the body to provide pressure redistribution. The new material can help to reduce shock from curb drops or driving over rough terrain and extensive testing against an industry ISO standard shows excellent durability, with no significant impact on foam performance after three consecutive rounds of cyclic testing each designed to simulate two years of use.

Ottobock's Aerial range of cushions feature lightweight breathable reticulated foam combined with an innovative BreathAir core. BreathAir technology uses spaghetti-like synthetic fibres to make the cushions ten times more breathable than traditional foam. These new cushions are ideal for active users who want a lightweight, stable cushion that helps to reduce the build-up of heat at the interface between the user and the cushion's surface.

The range incorporates six products across the two lines each designed to suit the individual needs of wheelchair users, different lifestyles and assorted budgets. The anatomical contoured shape is designed to support the bony structures of the body, enabling pressure redistribution whilst providing good lateral stability.

The Terra and Aerial ranges incorporate other innovative materials, such as the LiquiCells technology used in the Terra Aquos. Small fluid pads that sit on the surface of the cushion discretely under the cover reduce stretching and pulling of the skin (shear forces) which are also thought to contribute towards pressure ulcer development. This cushion is ideal for users who tend to move in their seat, such as those who propel a manual wheelchair.

"As wheelchair users know, the value of a good cushion that is suitable for your lifestyle cannot be underestimated. Having a poor cushion can lead to problems including pain, pressure ulcer and lack of comfort," said Phil Yates, Managing Director at Ottobock. "With over 50 years of experience developing foam for the demanding car industry, we have brought our German engineering and foam expertise to our new cushion range enabling all wheelchair users to benefit from the durability, comfort and breathability of our latest innovation."

The new range of cushions and Rest Suspension Foam are the latest innovations within Ottobock's broad range of mobility related products that includes seating systems, wheelchairs, standing aids and rehabilitation aids. The launch follows the introduction of the new custom-made rigid-frame wheelchair Ventus that was unveiled in June 2013.
