Whiston Hospital implements infection prevention programme in burns ward

Vernacare : 01 May, 2008  (Application Story)
Staff on the specialist burns and plastics ward at Whiston Hospital, part of the St Helens and Knowsley NHS Trust, is using the new Vernaclean Indicator to create an audit of their rigorous cleaning procedures.
The burns unit at Whiston Hospital, part of the St Helens and Knowsley NHS Trust, pioneered the use of cleansing hand gel for all ward visitors 11 years ago and has now taken a further step forward in its pursuit of excellence in infection prevention.

The Indicator tape, from Vernacare, can be applied to all types of hospital equipment from drip stands and lockers, to beds to prove that it is clean. The tape assures patients and clinicians of good standards of hygiene and provides visible evidence of best practice occurring.

Ward manager, sister Donnas Wilkinson explained: “Our commodes are cleaned thoroughly after each and every use, and the person who has disinfected the equipment then writes their name and the time of the clean on the tape and attaches it to the commode taking individual responsibility for standards of hygiene.”

“This also shows our patients that we take infection prevention extremely seriously and never settle for anything less than a gleaming unit with the highest possible standards of cleanliness.”

The Indicator has been trialled in other areas of Whiston Hospital and is proving effective in helping to control any instances of infection. Says Infection control Nurse Julie Roberts: “If we do have any outbreaks, we use the Indicator tape on all patient equipment as it is cleaned to ensure that no item is missed and rigorous standards of hygiene are reached.”

The Vernaclean Indicator is available from NHS Supplies in single roll size and 20-roll cases (product code FSE113). To order direct from Vernacare, quote ECI02.

Lesley Webster, sales and marketing director for Vernacare, said: “For as little as one pence per single use, the Vernaclean Indicator instils a powerful sense of public confidence in hygiene standards and reduces the likelihood of cross-infection.”
